Eastern Cape Garden Tour 18 – 26 October

Who would like to visit the Bedford Garden Festival with me?

As a member of the Country Garden Club, I have been in contact with the garden clubs of Bedford and Hogsback, in The Eastern Cape and I’m proposing a tour to this scenic area at festival time at the end of October.

We leave on the 18th of October and take gentle drive to the charming hamlet of Lady Grey. We spend two night there and will take a drive over the spectacular mountain pass, stopping to view the flora and visit a Bonsmara stud farm.

We’ll visit a sheep farm with working Border Collies, where we will enjoy a wholesome meal with the farmer and his wife.

On the 20th and 21st we’ll be in Hogsback visiting the festival gardens, crafts people and dining with a prominent potter and his opera singer wife.

After a visit to Adelaide we check into a guesthouse in the little village of Bedford, famous for its history and quaint gardens. There are many open gardens to view plus interesting speakers, ecursions and  exhibitions on subjects like trees, rock-art, birding and roses. They offer a rare plant sale, guided walks on farms and gourmet veld picnics.

After lunch on Sunday, we head homewards via Cradock or Smithfeild to Bloemfontein and then home.

Transport in a 4×4 vehicleto enable us to go “just off the beaten track”

Prices ± R8,750.00

8 nights 9 days all inclusive except some lunches in Bedford, drinks and tips.

Flower Tour to Namaqualand

As a member of the Country Garden Club. I am putting together an adventurous, Just Off The Beaten Track tour to Namaqualand.

We are extremely privileged to have Judd Kirkel, botanical horticulturist, wild flower and succulent specialist, accompany us.

The proposed route is from JHB on the N14 through Vryburg, Kuruman to Upington then Kakamas, Augrabies Falls, Pofadder, Aggeneys to Springbok including the Goegab Nature Reserve. From Springbok we turn on to the N7 to Kamieskroon, Garies, through Klaver to Clan William. We overnight in Lamberts Bay, to see the birds and the fishing village and dine at a beach skerm.

We turn homeward to Nieuwoudville, Calvinia, Carnarvon, on the R63 then on the R361 to van Wyksvlei then on the R357 to Prieska, Douglas, Kimberley (museum visit or other places of interest) and home .

Judd has established personal relationships with some of the farmers. This way we will be traveling through the Namaqua, Klipkoppe, Knersvlakte and Strandveld regions, and will afford us a general view and maximum diversity of the endemic plants and flowers.

We will also visit places of historical interest, Rock Art, birds and flowers.

We aim to fill a 16  seater Sprinter coach and accommodation where ever I can find it, mainly on farms and quest houses.

The estimated price per person sharing is R 10,885.00 for 8 nights, 9 days. This includes accommodation ,meals(excluding drinks and tips) and transport.

Thus far I have  been able to temporally book for the week of 17 August 2009, returning Tuesday 25 August. There have been good rains in the area and accommodation is being booked up very quickly. It is  essential that I get confirmation and a 50% deposit urgently in order to confirm these bookings.

Husbands and friend also welcome. This is not just for Garden Club members, anyone may join us.

Only 4 places left.
